Welcome

Leather chemicals manufacturer Royal Smit & Zoon has published its Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) report for 2021, highlighting the company’s environmental and social performance. The report is describing the company’s challenges for the future and the progress it is making towards its mission ‘to create a socially and environmentally sustainable leather supply chain’. Despite the impact of Covid-19 Royal Smit & Zoon is reporting strong progress towards its long-term goals with some specific highlights.

ESG Landscape

All the elements that add up to our ESG report can be aggregated and condensed into this one motto: Creating Sustainable Leather Together. In everything we do, in our R&D, in our production facilities, in our relations within and outside the industry, in our educational programs, and in the initiatives, we support, we feel responsible for the future of leather.

Our Strategy

The heart of our strategy is creating sustainable leather together, keeping in mind the continuity of our family-owned company, building on its rich history since 1821. This context of ‘taking care of the next generation’ is not only relevant in the family setting, but it is also something that affects our customers, industry partners, and other stakeholders.

Achievements

Innovation is at the heart of our strategy and we are on track to develop best in class chemistry. In the recent years, several new patents have been registered, updates of our Product Passport have been made and experiences have been widened a strong focus on Life Cycle Assessments, waste water guidelines, biodegradability, compostabilty, and circularity in general. This has led to several innovations in the recent years that are currently being marketed.

Covid 19

For the second year, COVID-19 had a profound impact on the leather industry, our company, and especially the lives of our employees. We expect this to continue well into 2022 and we make our plans accordingly.
