5. Like a Swiss army knife
There is plenty of Marine ingenuity in the new trencher. Like a Swiss army knife, you might won’t see it at the first sight. First, the combined cutting and jetting trenching tool optimises trenching in several different types of soil. Second, the Deep Dig-It is built like as a ‘tractor’, with a tooling cassette that can be swapped to accommodate different types of tools, including a disc cutter, smaller jetting swords or cutting swords. Finally, the Deep Dig-It is capable of trenching from the shore to the sea with a ‘beach-pack’.
4. First project
The Van Oord-Hellenic Cables Consortium has been awarded the contract to supply and install the cables at the Hollandse Kust (South) Alpha project. The trials will be carried out in February 2020. The Deep Dig-It will start on the project in July.
3. Learning by doing
We are always looking to improve our equipment but we also want to retain what is already working well. Since we were satisfied with our first trencher, we contracted the same supplier for the Deep Dig-It. As a result, it uses same components and software where possible such that our experienced operators can easily adopt themselves to work with the trencher and use/share Lessons Learned. At the same time, by sharing our Lessons Learned with the supplier, they were able to make significant improvements to the new trencher.
2. Changing market
We are taking on an ever-changing array of projects, including the construction of offshore wind farms farther out at sea. The Deep Dig-It makes this possible, for example by allowing us to work on projects across shipping fairways where the seabed might have to be lowered by dredging in the future as vessel drafts increase, or projects where the seabed is constantly shifting so therefore a larger burial depth might be required.
1. Deep Dig-It
Whereas the Dig-It can bury cables up to 3 metres, the Deep Dig-It can bury them up to 5.8 metres depth. It is also more powerful (1,800 kW compared to the Dig-It’s 1,200 kW). Another distinguishing feature of the Deep Dig-It is that it can be fitted with special trenching tools, such as a disc cutter for burying cable in rock.
