Day

World Emoji Day is a celebration of all emoji on July 17th and celebrated annually since 2014.

Emojipedia chose July 17 as the date for World Emoji Day, because that was when Apple first featured this date in reference to its calendar app on July 17, 2002; originally known as iCal. Several major platforms, including Google and Samsung, have since featured July 17 in honor of the occasion.

Origin

of

Emoji

In 1999, Shigetaka Kurita,
a Japanese interface designer,
set out to create a better way to convey complex meaning over text.

Being inspired by local road signs and Kanji, he created the first collection of 176 emojis for a popular Japanese internet platform i-mode, operating under the mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo. Its popularity led to that the Unicode Consortium had to recognize and create universal standards around emojis to unify the pictograms cross-platform for global use.

So basically, an emoji can be worth a thousand words

13:19

Thank you very much mr. Kurita!

You didn’t?         If you consider emoji a language, then it is actually the fastest-growing language in the world. Just about anyone can be become fluent - except for you.

13:20

But emoji misunderstanding is more common than we think. A friendly hand gesture in one culture can register as obscene in another.
