Coleen Hawrysko
CANSO Operations Programme Manager
"Air traffic flow management (ATFM) is a key component of safe, seamless airspace"
Coleen explains the importance of ATFM
Air traffic flow management (ATFM) helps to improve the safety and efficiency of aviation and boost connectivity
It is a procedure which balances air traffic demand against capacity, creating a safer, more efficient flow of traffic
The challenge
Boni Dibate
Director Africa Affairs
The response
Simon Zwane
SM ATM Planning at ATNS
With the fluctuation in demand for air transport, political challenges and rise of new airspace users in Africa, ATFM procedures are essential for ensuring safety, capacity and efficiency performance, while reducing impact on the environment.
"Our vision is to create harmonised, seamless ATM provision through a collaborative industry approach"
During the CANSO Africa Conference 2018 in Mombasa, Kenya, key ATM stakeholders including African ANSPs, CAAs, IATA and ICAO, agreed to develop a strategy to support the implementation of ATFM across Africa.
"The CANSO Mombasa ATFM Roadmap is one of the pillars to achieving harmonised operations in Africa and a vital step towards a seamless African sky"
Simon explains the importance of the CANSO Mombasa ATFM roadmap to
the Africa ATM community
Boni explains the importance of ATFM in Africa
The journey
In those areas unflyable due to political conflict, the Roadmap will also ensure safety and efficiency is maintained in and around FIRs by advocating participation in the relevant ICAO Contingency Coordinating Team (CCTs).
Endorsed by ICAO, the Roadmap will ensure the ATM community keeps pace with the traffic demand and makes efficient use of resources.
The CANSO Mombasa ATFM Roadmap is an initiative to integrate regional ATFM systems in line with the ICAO project 7 of the AAO/SG 2 under Aerodromes
The roadmap
CANSO is working with stakeholders in the region to implement the Roadmap, harmonising ATFM procedures across the region
ATFM procedures are currently not yet widely used in Africa
but CANSO is bringing the industry together to address this.
This collaborative initiative is known as the CANSO Mombasa ATFM Roadmap.
