The 1980s pond system was producing 40mg/l ammonia in the effluent. To achieve the challenging 2mg/l ammonia consent quality, the traditional solution would be to carry-out a conventional upgrade priced at $25M. Instead, using innovative US-developed ‘Bioshell®’ technology, our team achieved this standard – plus other quality improvements – for $6.5M.

Our creative workaround avoided the need to build a new treatment plant on an alternative site. Our team’s quick-thinking enabled a cost reduction of over $20m and estimated over 70% reduction in embodied carbon.
Our Paihia Community
03
The community of Paihia benefits from the improved water quality in the WWTP via the principles of Te Mana o te Wai. The community also has the peace of mind that comes from safeguarding the culturally significant Waitangi Wetlands.

We contributed to the protection of a national taonga, the Northland mudfish, all while producing sustainable solutions with minimal financial impact on the local community.
